STAYBELT MANUAL BELT TENSIONER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

READ INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE BEGINNING INSTALLATION. CHECK WATER PUMP FOR PLAY. CHECK TIMING BELT FOR AGE. THESE ITEMS SHOULD BE REPLACED AT THIS TIME IF THEY HAVE OVER 30,000 MILES ON THEM.

1) DISCONNECT BATTERY.

2) DISASSEMBLE AS PER NORMAL TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT, USE A MANUAL. (NOTE: DO NOT DISASSEMBLE UNTIL YOU HAVE LINED UP THE TIMING MARKS ON EACH CAM, CRANK PULLEY "P" MARK, AND DISTRIBUTOR AND MARKED THE POSITIONS! ACCIDENTALLY GETTING THESE COMPONENTS OUT OF TIME WILL BEND YOUR VALVES!)

3) REMOVE HYDRAULIC TENSIONER, SPRING AND BACKING PLATE.

4) USING VICE GRIPS OR DOUBLE-NUTTING, UNTHREAD AND DISCARD HOLLOW DETENSIONER MOUNTING STUD.

5) INSTALL YOUR ORIGINAL ROLLER FROM DETENSIONER ONTO STAYBELT UNIT WITH TAB AGAINST ADJUSTMENT BOLT.

6) PLUG OIL RETURN HOLE WITH SILICONE SEALER (USE SPARINGLY).

7) INSTALL STAYBELT WITH SEALER ON MOUNTING BOLT THREADS.

8) REINSTALL BELT.

9) CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK ALL TIMING MARKS!

10) ADJUST TENSIONING BOLT UNTIL YOU GET 1/4TH INCH BELT DEFLECTION MEASURED BETWEEN CAM PULLEYS. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!

11) PUT CAR IN FIFTH GEAR AND PUSH BY HAND UNTIL ENGINE MAKES TWO FULL REVOLUTIONS. THIS IS A SAFETY TEST ENSURING YOU HAVE THE TIMING CLOSE ENOUGH THAT YOU WILL NOT BEND VALVES UPON ENGAGING THE STARTER.

12) RECHECK TIMING AND BELT ADJUSTMENT.

13) REASSEMBLE COVERS AND ACCESSORIES.

14) CONNECT BATTERY AND GO.

15) CHECK TIMING BELT TENSION AT 15,000 MILES.
